Abbey’s Online Banking Glitch
Abbey customers using the bank’s online services encountered problems yesterday, with unrelated account details being displayed after logging on.
Customers reported being able to see direct debit details that didn’t belong to them, along with balances of accounts and transaction histories.
The bank quickly shut down the site for repairs after its security systems triggered warnings, and the whole episode lasted only around 5 hours.
Abbey say that there was no security breach, as the problem was a ‘presentational issue’ only, and that the data viewed was random and couldn’t be tied to specific customers. Fraudsters could not have taken advantage of the glitch, said a spokesperson, as transactions could not be initiated or changed.
